moxie… yes that moxie!!

Published by livemoxie at 10:16 pm under blah Edit This

So my grandmother came to visit us today.  I think I mentioned before that the reason I know about Moxie the drink is that my grandfather has always drank it and I grew up with him drinking it.  Now, I knew my grandmother was coming and I asked her if she could bring me some Moxie.  Moxie has a very unique taste and is only sold in certain areas of the country, mostly in the northeast where it is from.  Which means I have no access to it unless I can find a place around here that sells it.

Anyway… she told me that she would try to pack some in her suitcase and she brought me four cans.  So as I sit here I am drinking my Moxie!  :)  If you have never had it the taste is hard to explain.  It isn’t one that a lot of people would like.  The can looks a little bit old fashioned, but I absolutely LOVE Moxie.  I really think it has to do with the fact that it reminds me of my grandfather and something he has always loved.

Anyway, the taste as I mentioned is hard to explain.  It is not very healthy for you as the ingredients are; carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup and/or sugar, natural and artifical flavors, caramel color,  sodium benzote, gentian root extractives [I think this is where the taste comes from], phosphoric acid, caffeine and citric acid.  Healthy right?

I am trying to come up with a word to describe how it tastes but I can’t.  It tastes kind of bitter. I looked on the Internet to see what other people say and Wikipedia (yeah I know) says that the taste is from the gentian root extract and that you can kind of recreate the taste by adding “Angostura bitters to root beer, or by mixing Campari with Coca-Cola. Its bitter taste is also reminiscent of Italian chinotto soda”. It has a little bit of an after taste as well.  You should try some.  :)  There is Moxie information Here. It is definitely not for everyone.

I live in the South and have never heard of Moxie. This must be one of those drinks like Merlot (dark red wine) that you either like or hate. I love it and my husband can’t stand even the smell.
